Eviva Maria

Madonna della Civita

The eternal bond of the Itrani immigrants of Cranston, Rhode Island with their homeland of Itri, Italy, and their unwavering faith to the Madonna

Bernadette Conte

Author Bernadette Conte’s interest in her ancestral history began when she was a child and witnessed the many trials¸ struggles, and stories of the Itrani immigrants of Cranston, R.I. Itri, Italy, has been home of the Maria Santissima della Civita, the patron saint of the town for generations. Conte has attended the St. Mary’s church in Cranston since childhood, practiced their traditions and honors a replica of the Madonna della Civita. Through the years, her mother, who emigrated from Itri, Italy, gave her spiritual books and documents with a command to scrivi e ricorda (“write and remember”).

In 1975 at the request of her pastor Reverend Andrew Farina, Bernadette Conte began her research on the Maria Santissima della Civita and the eternal bond of the Itrani immigrants with their homeland of Itri, Italy. Deeply touched by their profound faith in “their” Madonna prompted her to write their story so that all generations of the Itrani people will remember the legacy left to them.
